Hi, I have just read the story about the landlord of the Griffin, and it reminded of an experience I had many years ago on Thornaby Green. It was in 1974, and I was a barmaid at Thornaby Village Club on the green. I had just finished my evening shift and was walking with another of the staff, up the steep road opposite the club, which leads to Thornaby Road. As it was close to midnight, there was nobody else about. As if from nowhere, there appeared not far from us, a figure walking across the grass in the direction of St. Peter's Church. The figure was very tall and was wearing a long, black cloak and a black floppy hat. He had a black, labrador-type dog with him. I felt very uneasy and turned to my friend to ask her if she had noticed the man. She looked over to where I was pointing and asked, "Which man?" I looked back to the spot and there was nobody there. He couldn't have gone anywhere in that short time as he was right in the middle of the green. She then said, "Was he wearing a black cloak and hat and did he have a dog with him?" I told her that yes, she was exactly right. She then told me that he was the ghost of the green and had been seen by other people too. We grabbed hold of each other's hand and ran up to Thornaby Road in record time!
